She is Nixie #07/100. Created on a 5×5″ birch wood panel (12.7×12.7 cm).
Kamaria is a Nixie of the Moon. She always felt like she does not belong anywhere; partly because of her skin color. She is what they call “racially ambiguous“. People try to put Kamaria in a racial box, to figure out where her origins are from. But why would that matter? Does it make her less than or more than? It should not.
Not belonging, not being part of… something, of a community, is the biggest wound on Kamaria’s heart. No matter how hard she tries, she always feels like she’s faking it. She is learning how to navigate the world as a unique being and teaches us how to do so as well.
This Nixie is dear to me as it was inspired by my two beautiful daughters.
About my 100 Nixies project
2018 was a rough year for my creativity. I pondered way too often if I should just sell everything and move on to something else. I guess I put too much pressure on my shoulders.
However, I have learned to listen to the various creative nudges when they appear. This is how this project of creating 100 Nixies on small wood panels was born. No deadline, no constraint other than express whatever wants to be expressed and to do it surrounded by joy.
I am bored easily and get frustrated with my artwork on a weekly basis. This is why I decided to take some pressure off my shoulders and to do something fun instead: create a series of 100 Nixies. They have a few things in common: they are all Kings (see their crowns), they are born out of explorations.
